How We Actually Pick Gyms for This Directory

Most gym “directories” are either a reskinned Google Maps embed or a list of whoever paid for a featured slot. Neither is useful if you’re actually trying to find a place to train near you. Here’s what we do instead, and — just as importantly — where the gaps are.
Where the data comes from
Every listing starts as public business data for the Klang Valley — name, address, phone number, category, opening hours, and whether it’s open 24 hours. We don’t ask venues to submit themselves, and nobody pays for a better spot in a city or category list. If a gym looks better on this site than its neighbor, it’s because more people rated it well, not because it paid for placement.
What we clean up
Raw business data is messier than it looks. The two biggest problems we ran into building this site:
- Wrong-country leakage. Fitness search terms are global, and a chunk of our raw scrape turned out to be gyms in Miami and San Francisco that had nothing to do with Malaysia. We removed every listing that wasn’t actually in the Klang Valley.
- Nested cities. Malaysian addresses nest smaller districts inside bigger ones — a Kepong address literally reads “…Kepong…Kuala Lumpur.” A naive filter would count that gym toward both cities. We built a single resolution rule so every listing lands in exactly one town: its own district first, the parent city only if there’s no more specific match.
What we don’t do
- We don’t fabricate pricing. Google’s business data doesn’t reliably expose membership pricing, so we don’t publish membership costs. If a listing is missing a field, we just leave it blank — no “starting from RM99” guesses.
- We don’t write a review for every listing. With 400+ venues, a genuine written take on each one would either take months or turn into filler. Listings stay factual — name, address, hours, rating — until we can genuinely say something specific about a place.
- We don’t sell placement. Order within a city or category is driven by rating and review count, full stop.
Who’s actually running this
seekgym.net is run by Amirul Hakim, a Kuala Lumpur–based former muay thai competitor who trained across gyms in KL, PJ, and Shah Alam before coaching part-time and eventually building this site to answer the question friends kept texting him: where do I actually train around here.
If you spot something wrong — a closed gym, a bad address, a missing venue — the fastest fix is reporting it directly, not waiting for us to notice.
